Sure you’re wondering what S.P.G is? Haha lemme tell you a story…
…so sometime last month in my church, we started running connect circles. Connect circles are c-o-n-n-e-c-t c-i-r-c-l-e-s LOL! A small group of people “bound” by common interests. The announcement went something like: you can join any of these connect circles – foodies,
crafts, merchants, wife life,…, SPG! My first heart-choice was foodies!!! 😀 The plan was to learn how to make oha soup and eat all sorts of good stuff. Get fat maybe. Lol. But “my flesh” thought “I’ll join the next batch. Let this first batch make all the mistakes first”. I know that sounds carnal human. Hehehe…
So the next circle that caught my attention was Sexual Purity Gang! *drumrolls* now you know what SPG stands for. I first laughed! Yea that’s because I know – the name sounds like some virgins, celibate folks and some more virgins gang. I remember saying “okay let’s go and join the gang oh” as I jokingly strolled to the registration desk. Can’t believe it’s already 6 weeks since I joined the SPG! The amazing thing about the group is that we were a bunch of young people who had sincere hearts to walk in sexual purity. Hearts poured out, experiences shared, questions asked, solutions provided, prayers offered and of course, food shared! Hehehe… That summarises SPG for me. It’s so beautiful to know that in this “legit struggle” of sexual purity and your sincere desire to honour God with your body, you really are not alone! There’s so much to share from my experience at SPG and maybe I will in subsequent posts (so be sure to click on this link ). Today, however, I’ll like to share with you, letters from my gang-members’ hearts.

If it were 2 years ago, I’d never have joined a group with such a glaring name as Sexual Purity Gang. But you know, the first thing it’s done for me is to take away my Friday nights being spent on wine, beer and you guessed right… phoning random hook-ups! It was that bad, yeah!
(P.S: The SPG usually meet on Friday evenings from 6:30pm) Another thing SPG has done is EXPOSE ME TO THE TRUTH. The Bible tells me that if I
know the truth, I will be free. So every Friday for the past 6 weeks, I have been exposed to the truth concerning my addictions – pornography, masturbation, occasional drinking and smoking. And it’s beautiful how setting my gaze on the truth truly liberates me! My addictions
aren’t automatically vanished but I do have the power to CHOOSE. What the truth does for me is that, it strengthens me to choose the right way.

My decision to be a part of SPG was birthed from a place of curiosity. I had a number of questions that I had hoped would be answered from the scripture’s point of view. Okay! Let me take off the mask… I have been really close to this guy, so much that I started to get confused. His decisions and actions concerning sexual purity got me all shades of distorted. I had started to wonder if God says different things to different people, concerning this sex matter. Bottom-line… the timing for joining SPG was just-so right! I’m grateful for LIGHT. For every question in my heart, I got scriptural answers. Too thankful that I’m a part of this amazing family!

VULNERABILITY – that’s a word that’s always been out of my personal dictionary. I’m the “hard guy”. LoL… of course, I’m female but you get me. *wink* Joining SPG for me was a mind-shift. I found out that there is amazing strength in being vulnerable. There’s strength in sharing with the “right” people, your struggles, temptations and even your fall. Especially when it comes to sexual sin; because sexual sin thrives in secrecy. Another thing that stood-out for me was/is the fact that – Sex is not merely skin-on- skin (yup that’s how the Bible states that verse. I Corinthians 6:16 MSG); It is honouring and worshipping God, when done in marriage. Bruh, SEX is WORSHIP!

The SPG circle was definitely not tops on my list! But then I found myself in there, with the REALEST set of people. Never knew I could find such a setting within church. The conversations were so apt and practical. For the first time, it dawned on me that avoiding topics on sex and sexuality “in the spirit of being born again” was not necessary at all. What matters is discussing them with the RIGHT people – of like minds and with similar goals.
People who are honest and vulnerable, yet strong in God and purpose-full. I have looked forward to SPG meetings every week for the past 6 weeks. Grateful that I found myself in there, somehow. Now I’m no longer “novice” LoL! It’s truly been refreshing, switching from the falsehood the media constantly throws at us, to what the word really says about sex and sexuality.

I had been struggling with something for a bit, and had done all I knew to do – confessed, prayed, etc. but nothing had changed.
Hearing about SPG (sexual purity gang) as a connect circle in church was such a breath of fresh air! I didn’t even care what exactly it entailed; I just needed help with being ‘pure’. So I decided I’d go for these meetings. Did they help? Totally! Especially with the teaching that light is what matters with this whole sexual purity thing. Exposing the idiot devil in a setting that is safe, godly, and constructive, that’s exactly what this gang has done for me. I realised that in so many ways, I’m not alone; but in Christ, we can all be victorious.

SPG for me was exactly what I needed at the time I needed it! I had just come out of a struggle involving purity and I needed some form of reinforcement to ensure I didn’t slip back. SPG provided all that and more. The warmth was amazing! I came once and was

By the way, Olu said to tell you: “FREE, the event you should attend, is really about choices; being in control of those raging emotions and desires, no matter how raunchy. I do not deny that I am imperfect still; but I have recognised the most important thing which is; accepting what God says about me, and absolutely leaning on the Holy Spirit daily. So yes!!, I DO HAVE CONTROL over my emotions and my sexuality, through Christ!”

That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you’ve been raised from the dead!—into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God. -Romans 6:12-14 (MSG)
